The MAEC museum (Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca e della Città di Cortona) features remarkable collections of egyptian, etruscan and roman antiquities as well as artifacts recovered during recent excavation campaigns, that provide a unique insight into the history of the Valdichiana and that of the different civilizations that contributed to shaping it.
And when you're done shopping at the Vadichiana Outlet Village, why not take a unique journey back in time surrounded by art, history and stunning landscapes? Take the freeway to Perugia: Cortona is waiting for you, just a 20 minute drive from the outlet.
In the mid 1800s, english explorer and writer George Dennis wrote this of the ancient etruscan town: “Thou mayst have wandered far and wide through Italy — nothing hast thou seen more venerable than Cortona. Ere the days of Hector and Achilles, ere Troy itself arose — Cortona was”. There, you will be able to stroll through its tourist-crowded streets, lined by age-old buildings and churches, venture through its winding alleyways and get a taste of the local food and wine delicacies; and make sure you take some time to visit the MAEC, one of the leading and most visited museums across Tuscany.
Together with the “Comune di Cortona”, the museum is also run by the “Accademia Etrusca”, one of the town’s key cultural institutions, credited among the founders of modern archaeology. Drawing on the teachings of that science, today the MAEC puts its treasures on display exploring original exhibition concepts and innovative didactic approaches.
And if you like to enjoy your art and history in the great outdoors, dont’miss the opportunity to visit the Archeological Park (“Parco Archeologico”) at Sodo - less than 2 Km from Cortona – many of the exhibits now on display in the museum where recovered there. Nestled amidst verdant grounds, the park features the remains of imposing etruscan burials and a recently-recovered impressive stepped altar-platform that are guaranteed to take your breath away.
