The fortress town of Palmanova is a UNESCO World Heritage Site On 9th July 2017, the star-shaped town of Palmanova, thanks to the favourable opinion of the World Heritage Commission, has become one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, together with Bergamo and Peschiera del Garda for Italy, Zara and Sebenico for Croatia, Cattaro for Montenegro. The nomination for Palmanova was presented at the end of January 2016 in Paris with the project “Venetian Defense Works between the 15th and the 17th Century”. It is the 53rd Italian UNESCO Site and the 5th in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Palmanova is a town based on a unique model, a perfectly symmetrical nine-pointed star, with a central square called Piazza Grande – the historic fortress square. Piazza Grande is surrounded by many historical Venetian palaces, such as the Loggia della Gran Guardia (Loggia of the Guard), the Palazzo dei Provveditori Generali (Palace of the General Proveditors), the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà (Pawn Palace) and the Palazzo del Governatore delle Armi (Palace of the Governor of Arms), which, as a whole, constitute an example of serial military architecture. The Square is also overlooked by the magnificent Duomo Dogale (Doge's Cathedral). An opportunity not to be missed is the visit of the Civic History Museum of the Historical Military Museum and the three entrances of the town.
