A town that symbolizes the hardy, taciturn Friulian character, and the poetry of its wild, surprising nature. After the terrible earthquake of 1976, Gemona became the symbol of the tough, hardworking Friulian people: in a short time they rebuilt their city as lovely as before. Don’t fail to visit the cathedral, a majestic example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, possibly between the end of July and the beginning of August when a historical pageant is held that turns the entire town into a medieval city. A few kilometers from Gemona stands the House of Butterflies at Bordano, a little paradise of tropical gardens and exotic animals. The butterflies, free to fly, accompany the visitors in their discovery of the habitats of Amazonia, the Asian rainforests and the African jungle, accurately rebuilt on over 1000 square meters of air conditioned greenhouses.
